Al Aguilar is the CEO and Chief Creative Officer at Creative Civilization, one of the region’s most respected and active full-service advertising and public relations firms with offices in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. He and Gisela Girard founded the agency in 1999 and continue to contribute communications excellence for their community and their clients. Creative Civilization’s work is visible in many national and regional brands, making an impact in industries to include healthcare, retail, manufacturing, arts and culture, economic development and others.

From San Antonio to the Smithsonian, through Aguilar’s nearly three-decade career in advertising, he has been called a “creative genius” by members of the press, and “Godfather of Hispanic Marketing”. He is credited for making San Antonio, Texas, the “Madison Avenue of Hispanic Advertising”. He’s also known for his creation of San Antonio’s ubiquitous mantra, “Go Spurs Go” as Aguilar’s agency led the Spurs marketing for over 14 years, encompassing four NBA championships.

Aguilar’s illustrious work in the advertising industry has been recognized on both a local and national level. In 2015 the Smithsonian Museum of American History inducted Aguilar and his creative work for a twenty-year exhibit, American Enterprise, further establishing him as a visionary leader in the world of advertising. HispanicAd.com named Aguilar the first recipient of the “Advertising Executive of the Year.”

At an early age, Aguilar was inspired by David Ogilvy’s Confessions of an Adman, which led him to pursue an advertising career.

He began his remarkable journey with a marketing position at Scott Paper Company in Chicago and also served as marketing manager at Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta before returning to San Antonio to begin his distinctive career in agency entrepreneurship.

As a partner at Sosa, Bromley, Aguilar & Associates, Aguilar led the team to a period of unprecedented growth, helping the agency become the largest ad agency in San Antonio and the largest Hispanic ad agency in the United States.

Throughout his celebrated career, Aguilar has led marketing efforts for many Fortune 100 companies in America, including Coca-Cola, American Airlines, Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA) and Quest Diagnostics, as well as numerous high-profile local brands including Spurs Sports and Entertainment, Frozen Beverage Dispensers, Gonzaba Medical Group, University Health System and the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, to name a few.

Aguilar’s leadership role in the advertising industry extends to his commitment of serving his community. He has served on numerous boards including his role as 2015 chairman of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, San Antonio Sports and the Harlandale Education Foundation.

I took early retirement in 1995 from Kodak and I have been in the real estate business since then. During my Kodak career my family lived in six states and we owned thirteen homes. I held positions as Food Trade Manager, Attractions Manager for Florida, Director of Sales Promotion, National Account Manager to HEB Grocery Company and National Sales Manager – US Military – Worldwide. In the twelve years since I retired from Kodak, I’ve been in the real estate business. My entry into the business was through two major agencies; one a local upscale boutique company and the other a very large local operation of a national franchise. I found both (plus most others in the business) to be more oriented towards gross sales and less towards taking care of the needs of the consumer. As a result, I formed my own company. I have three agents besides myself in the company and two staff personnel. Approximately ninety percent of our business comes from direct referrals plus we represent all of the relocating employees for three corporations. Each week I host the area real estate show, Real Estate Focus, on NewsTalk 930 KLUP, Saturdays at 11:00am. In addition, Bjorn Dybdahl, owner of Bjorn’s Home Entertainment, http://www.Bjorns.com and I host the San Antonio Movers and Shakers Show that airs at 10:00 am each Saturday from the same station and web sites. The real estate show deals with area real estate information and the SA Movers and Shakers show honors the education, business, civic, and public leaders who keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive in our city.
